Legend
During the Mahabharatha era, after the escape from Arakkillam, the Pandavas along with mother Kunthi reached the place where the temple is now situated. As they were suffering from the burns due to the fire occurred in Arakkillam, Kunthi prayed to Lord Krishna and Lord Krishna suggested Kunthi to worship Lord Aditya. Lord Aditya himself installed the idol of Lord Siva and asked Kunthi to go for tapas for getting solace. Kunthi started the tapas at that place which was surrounded by back waters. Lord Siva was pleased by the devotion of Kunthi and appeared in front of Kunthi along with Parvathi Devi.
Kunthi could find only the salt crystals lying around and collecting the same in both hands offered the same to the Lord. Lord Siva and Parvathi Devi were extremely pleased with the tapas and blessed Kunthi and Pandavas to get relieved from all burns and sufferings. Later, Kunthi installed the idol of Lord Maha Vishnu near the Siva temple and along with Pandavas constructed a new pond in front of the Vishnu temple.
